URBANA — Former Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin pleaded guilty Monday, April 21, to one count of having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and or/drugs in Champaign County Municipal Court.

Melvin was originally facing a charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs stemming from a Dec. 18, 2024, traffic stop by Urbana police.

He refused to do field sobriety tests during that stop and was arrested for OVI.

Per a plea agreement, Melvin will serve one year of community control and pay fines and court costs totaling $472.

The former sheriff also received 60 days in jail. The court gave him credit for serving three days and suspended the remaining jail time, according to court records.

Chad Burroughs replaced Melvin as Champaign County Sheriff in January after defeating him in the 2024 Republican Primary Election.
