Made for the shade

The Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission made its biannual appearance at the Logan County Farmers Market in downtown Bellefontaine Saturday, May 17, armed with 62 trees that were purchased by the Commission from Riverside Native Trees in Delaware and given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

The various species of native trees available included Allegheny serviceberry, bald cypress, basswood (American linden), hazelnut, red maple, shumard oak, red oak and tulip poplar.

The Shade Tree Commission was established 1975 and is comprised of community volunteers who have a management plan to maintain the healthy resource of trees – especially trees that are native to Ohio – in the city while working in concert with the Ohio Division of Forestry and Regional Urban Foresters.

The Shade Tree Commission will be giving away more trees this fall, when the group visits the Logan County Farmers Market once again.
