Lucas W. Gilbert, 20, of Columbus, and Thomas J. Bussard, 19, of Dublin, Ohio, were charged with theft, breaking and entering and tampering with evidence related to an incident early Sunday morning, June 2, at The Donut Shop & Bakery, 104 E. Main St., Russells Point.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded about 2:30 a.m. to the store on a report of two male juvenile subjects attempting to break into the business. When deputies arrived, they observed the two young adult males, later identified as Gilbert and Bussard, standing by the water and throwing something into the water.
Deputies asked to speak to the two defendants, and they claimed to have been fishing in the area and they also did not have IDs to give to deputies.
Both defendants were detained at that time, and deputies observed multiple donuts floating in the water nearby. Bussard admitted to deputies that he and his friend were out on a walk when they observed the donuts in the store window and “thought they were a good idea.”
At the donut shop, deputies observed hand prints and fingerprints on the serving window in front of the business. The doors to the business were secure when deputies checked them.
Both defendants were placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail.
Deputies were able to speak with the business owner, who said there was no damage to the building as result of the incident. Two metal trays valued at $40 had been taken, along with six dozen donuts, valued at $93.
