Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are actively participating in a multi-county investigation into a series of alleged forcible entry and thefts from businesses, including two local businesses in the period of a week.
Officers from the West Liberty Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s deputies responded March 29 to a breaking and entering complaint at Thoman’s IGA, 201 S. Detroit St., West Liberty, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Surveillance footage showed suspects wearing face masks, gloves and dark clothing. The individuals reportedly used a crowbar to shatter two glass entrance doors to gain entry and reportedly were seen stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the business.
Coordinated efforts among local law enforcement agencies including the Bellefontaine Police Department provided investigators with key information, the sheriff’s office reported.
One suspect was identified and linked to an ongoing theft ring operating across multiple counties in central Ohio. Arrest warrants were issued, and law enforcement agencies throughout the region began searching for the suspect.
On April 6, deputies were dispatched again for a similar break-in at the Marathon gas station at 115 N. Main St. in West Mansfield. The suspects reportedly used similar methods and tools, again escaping with cash and valuables. Investigators believe this incident is connected to the Thoman’s IGA break-in due to the suspects’ appearance and tools used.
Additional evidence, including a secondary suspect vehicle, led authorities to the apprehension of the identified suspect on April 7 in Franklin County. Investigators continue working to confirm the identity of a second suspect, and further charges are expected to be filed in multiple counties.
“A special thanks to assistance from the West Liberty Police Department, Bellefontaine Police Department, and several others for their assistance in these investigations. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office takes these types of crimes very seriously and dedicates countless hours and resources to keeping our communities safe,” Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds said.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
