BASEBALL

West Liberty-Salem 3, Waynesville 0

West Liberty-Salem got a win over Waynesville in Division V tournament play on Friday.

The teams were locked in a scoreless duel through 5 1/2 innings before the Tigers broke through in the bottom of the sixth.

Jake Evans hurled a complete game for the win, holding the Spartans to three hits. He walked two and racked up 11 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth, leadoff batter Tim Howells reached on an error. Caleb Hershberger was hit by a pitch and Brody Deam beat out a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.

Reese Oder singled to the left side to score Howells. After Hershberger was picked off, Isaiah Reames singled. Two batters later, Dallas Koons’s base hit scored Deam and Oder.

Evans then retired three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to secure the win.

West Liberty-Salem is now 14-7 on the year. They will host Graham in a district semifinal game Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Ben Logan 9, Bellefontaine 2

Ben Logan advanced with a win over Bellefontaine in Division IV.

Most of the game was played Wednesday, and it was completed Friday after being suspended in the bottom of the sixth.

Bryden Morris was the winning pitcher for the Raiders, working five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits, walked four and struck out nine.

Finishing things off was Adam Tinsman, who permitted one hit and two walks in two innings. 

Soli Hughes had three hits and drove in three runs, and Carter Lyden brought in two. Other RBIs came from Morris and Camden Spriggs.

For Bellefontaine, Spencer Stolly threw four innings and took the loss. He gave up three runs on five hits, with five walks and four strikeouts.

Sammy Kline and Sutton Daring each pitched one inning. Kline allowed four runs and Daring two. Kline issued three walks and Daring two. That made 10 in total.

Jose Sandoval had two hits and Daring one, with Aven Caudill getting an RBI.

Ben Logan grabbed an early lead, getting one in the first when Hughes walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a single by Morris.

They added two in the second on a double by Lyden after hits by Xavier Allen and Hughes.

Bellefontaine scored in the third due to couple of errors by the Raiders. 

In the fifth, Daring singled to left and Sandoval to center, then Brody Boy walked to load the bases. Caudill’s fly to left was caught, but it allowed Daring to tag up and score, making it 3-2.

Kline took over on the mound in the bottom half. He hit Parker Yelton and walked Cayden Brown, then Allen reached on a bunt single. 

A lineout by Oliver Morse was used to double off Carter Fay at third (running for Yelton). But Hughes then got a hit to right, scoring Allen and Brown.

Kline continued to struggle with control in the wet conditions, and Hughes would score on a wild pitch. Lyden and Morris walked, and a single by Spriggs scored Lyden to make it 7-2.

The Raiders added two runs in the sixth, one when Brown was awarded home due to interference when he slid into third.

The game was then halted and resumed Friday. Hughes drove in Allen on a single.

In the top of the seventh, Bellefontaine got a double by Sandoval and a walk by Boy, but nothing more.

Bellefontaine ends the year at 7-13.

Ben Logan, now 12-12, advances to face Eaton in a district semifinal on Wednesday. The site has yet to be announced.

Urbana 8, Indian Lake 2

Indian Lake fell to Urbana in Division IV play Thursday at home.

The Lakers end the year at 11-11.

Urbana scored two in the first, five in the fourth and one more in the seventh inning.

Indian Lake had a run in the third and one in the sixth.

Taking the loss was Madden Lillard. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, and allowed seven runs on five hits and one walk. 

Jaxon Snipes then pitched 1 1/3, with two hits and one walk, and Tyler Tidwell handled the final two, allowing one hit. Each of them had two strikeouts.

Tidwell had two hits, with one each by Lillard, Brady Golliday and Chance Persinger. Lillard and Bryce Burton drove in the runs.

Catholic Central 7, Riverside 4

Riverside was eliminated with a loss to Springfield Catholic Central on Friday in Division VII.

The Fighting Irish scored two in the third, four in the fifth and one in the seventh to advance.

The Pirates scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Brody Orsborne was the losing pitcher, going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits, walked eight and struck out seven. Landon Purtee got the final two outs, one of which was on strikes.

Offensively, Gavin Orsborne had three hits, with two apiece for Brody Orsborne and Purtee. Driving in the runs were Brody Orsborne, Purtee, Gunner Carpenter and Hayden Sanford.

Riverside’s season ends with a record of 7-16.

SOFTBALL

Greenville 12, Bellefontaine 0

Bellefontaine lost to top seed Greenville 12-0 in a Division III district final Friday.

The game ended after five innings.

The Green Wave scored one run in the first, then had four in the third and seven in the fourth.

Bellefontaine had three hits, with one each by Ava Dolan, Joy Fogan and Airiana Young.

Fogan, Kassi Prine and Dolan combined to pitch for the Lady Chiefs. They allowed 14 hits, and Fogan got two strikeouts.

Bellefontaine ends the year with a final record of 8-15 overall and 5-11 in the Central Buckeye Conference.

On Thursday, Bellefontaine defeated Archbishop Carroll 16-3 in five innings. Joy Fogan got the win, allowing five hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Laila Butler and Ava Watson each had three hits. Getting two apiece were Kassi Prine, Ava Dolan, Addison Wical, Fogan, and Airiana Young.
