Teens charged in impaired driving-related traffic stop

BellefontainePolice Patch-200William Gonzolas, 18, and Christian Gonzolas, 17, each of Bellefontaine, were charged with alcohol-related offenses following complaints of erratic driving and a traffic stop executed early Sunday morning by officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department.

Officers were dispatched around 5:45 a.m. Feb. 26, to the city’s south side following separate calls to dispatch reporting an erratic driver unable to maintain marked lanes.

While en route, officers were notified the vehicle was idling in the Burger King drive-thru, 2005 S. Main St., but the restaurant was not yet open.

Upon making contact with the driver, signs of impairment were observed, including the strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle.

The passenger, Christian, was found to be passed out and Bellefontaine EMS responded and transported him to Mary Rutan Hospital for evaluation.

The defendant admitted to drinking five beers. He told officers through an interpreter they were coming from Springfield and were getting food because they were hungry.

William was charged with OVI, underage consumption and no operator’s license. Christian was charged with underage consumption.

The teens were released into the custody of a sober person.
