Westly McVety is sworn into service recently as a new Russells Point Police Department officer. A native of Minster, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps following his high school graduation, where he served as an infantry rifleman from 2013 to 2017 and earned his Class A CDL. After his honorable discharge he gained workforce experience at different jobs before his most recent employment at Airstream. During his time there, he went back to school and joined the Wright State University (Lake Campus) Police Academy, where he worked to complete an eight-month police academy. Officer McVety graduated on April 9 and with the support of the council and Mayor Huffman, was given a conditional offer April 10. Officer McVety was required to successfully pass the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission physical fitness test and the written exam. Following his success, Officer McVety began his first shift with the department May 6 and has been working diligently to get oriented to the village geography, learn the various codes and signals, computers systems, report writing, and the community overall, Chief Joe Freyhof said. He will complete a field training packet of up to three months of additional training before being assigned to a permanent shift. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)
