Snow emergency issued

A snow emergency has been declared in Logan County following an overnight snow that blanketed the region and impacted commutes.

Sheriff Randy Dodds issued a Level 1 snow emergency around 5 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, advising motorists to use caution due to snow-covered roadways.

Snow began falling throughout the area around 10 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2. All roadways were effectively covered in snow by Midnight. Main thoroughfares were largely cleared by 6 a.m. Friday, though some localized drifting snow was reported. County and township roads remained covered.

The snow event comes as frigid temperatures are expected to grip the area over the weekend, with wind chills potentially dropping below zero.

In response to the cold snap, the Bellefontaine First Church of God (BFCOG) has put out an urgent call for volunteers to staff its Recovery Zone Emergency Warming Shelter. The shelter, located at 1000 E. Brown Avenue, operates overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. whenever temperatures are forecasted to fall below 20 degrees.

According to the church’s Facebook page, immediate help is needed for the upcoming nights.

Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact BFCOG by calling 937-210-9003 or emailing [email protected].

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution during the snow emergency and to monitor local updates for changing road conditions.
