OVI arrest leads to ICE hold

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department report Isaac Bonilla Ortega, 25, of Columbus, is in the Logan County Jail following a traffic stop Saturday, July 5, at 10:23 p.m.

Officers received a report of a car with multiple lane violations headed east on U.S. Route 33 Saturday night. Officers then spotted Ortega driving erratically on U.S. 33 east of the U.S. Route 68 interchange and initiated a traffic stop.

Ortega, who did not speak English, showed signs of intoxication and with the help of a smartphone translator, attempted and failed several field sobriety tests. Officers were not able to get a BAC sample with a breathalyzer.

Ortega was charged with OVI, no operator’s license and weaving. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was notified or Ortega’s arrest and confirmed that Ortega was not legally in the country and is subject to deportation proceedings.

He remained lodged in the Logan County Jail as of Monday afternoon.

• Kareem Devon Williams is facing unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of drug abuse instruments following his arrest Friday, July 4, at about 6:40 p.m.

The police report states that Williams took his ex-girlfriend’s truck June 23, claiming that he was going to Youngstown for a funeral, but had since failed to return it, prompting her to file a report with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.

The maroon 2003 Dodge 2500 pickup was located several days later on Friday, July 4, in the parking lot of the VFW, 216 Orchard Ave. at about 6:40 p.m.

As the truck was about to be towed, officers searched the unlocked cab and found a hypodermic needle, a bottle of prescription drugs, IDs belonging to Williams and suspected heroin residue. It was at this time that Williams arrived on the scene on foot, when he was placed under arrest on the above charges as well as a probation violation.

• Virgil Anthony Hickle, 62, at large, was lodged in the Logan County Jail for public intoxication Sunday at about 8:14 p.m. after he was observed panhandling at at Speedy Mart, 511 S. Main St.

Officers report that Hinkle had a strong odor of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet and was placed under arrest for his own well-being and charged with public intoxication before being taken to the jail.

• Arrested under similar circumstances on early Sunday morning was was Dane Kelly Brown, 43, 409 Clark Ave.

Brown reportedly called BPD dispatch at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, asking if any jail cells were available. Noting that Brown came across as extremely intoxicated, and he alerted dispatch as to his whereabouts near the intersection of west Auburn Avenue and south Elm Street, police arrived on the scene.

Officers tried to talk Brown out of being arrested, but he insisted, and eventually got his wish as he was taken into custody on the charge of disorderly conduct by intoxication, Brown noting after his arrest that he needed a “cool down” following family problems. Brown was lodged in the jail without incident.

• Officers also report the arrest of Jeffrey David Ferrell, 34, of Ridgeway, at Blue Jacket Park Monday, July 7, at about 6:30 p.m.

A passerby reportedly found Ferrell asleep near a Dumpster on the park grounds and alerted police. Officers located Ferrell, who smelled strongly of alcohol and once roused, showed signs of intoxication and was unable to complete a sobriety test.

Ferrell attempted to call family members to come to the scene and pick him up, but found no takers, so given his condition, officers placed Ferrell under arrest for public intoxication and lodged him in the Logan County Jail without incident.
