The suspect in a double-murder in West Virginia who fled to Bellefontaine and reportedly shot and killed himself as local and federal law enforcement prepared to arrest him has been identified.
Stevie Roseberry, 46, of Belpre, Ohio, had been on the run for less than 12 hours by the time U.S. Marshals and officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department located him at the Comfort Inn in Bellefontaine late in the evening on Friday, Dec. 1.
A warrant for first-degree murder had been issued for Roseberry’s arrest in the shooting deaths of Thomas Platt, 45, and Christy Roseberry, 43, hours earlier in Vienna, West Virginia.
According to a social media post from the Vienna Police Department, officers there were dispatched about 4:40 p.m. Friday to an apartment where the bodies had been found by a family member.
Investigators said interviews and evidence collected on scene led to the identification of a suspect. U.S. Marshals assisted in gathering information on the suspect’s location. Roseberry had reportedly stolen a Chrysler 200 sedan and fled the area.
Local police were notified around 11:45 p.m. Friday the suspect had been tracked to Bellefontaine.
Law enforcement secured the area surrounding the suspect’s hotel room, and attempted to make contact with Roseberry. Shortly thereafter, police reported the sound of a single gunshot from inside the hotel room.
A .40-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver with a Confederate flag handle along with five rounds of ammunition was found inside the room, along with a black nylon face mask, a knife, the suspect’s wallet, cigarettes and a lighter.
