The following press release was provided by Benjamin Logan Schools:
At the April 21, 2025, meeting of the Benjamin Logan Board of Education, a comprehensive update was presented on the condition of the district’s aging facilities and the pressing infrastructure challenges ahead. The update was shared to promote open communication and transparency with all district stakeholders.
All three of the district’s current school buildings are now over 30 years old. While the district has worked diligently to maintain and extend the life of these facilities, the reality is that maintenance and part replacement needs are growing each year. The district has been proactive in budgeting for routine upkeep; however, unexpected repairs can be difficult to address without impacting other areas of the budget.
One of the most urgent concerns is the Wastewater Treatment Plant, which serves the district and has been in operation for 35 years. A recent report presented to the board estimates the cost to repair and replace essential components of the plant at $500,000. This work is required to maintain compliance with EPA regulations and avoid escalating costs. In response, the plan is to complete the project in full now, rather than delaying and facing more severe consequences in the future.
Other capital improvement and maintenance needs identified include:
• Purchase of new school buses (approximately $135,000 per unit)
• Fire panel and fire pump control panel replacements
• Bleacher repairs and maintenance
• Roof leak repairs and tuck pointing
• Replacement of interior doors throughout school buildings
• Asphalt and concrete repairs to driveways and sidewalks
“Our buildings continue to serve our students well, but time and use take a toll,” said Superintendent Scheu. “While we are committed to living within our means, we feel it is important to be honest with our community about the reality we face. These aging systems require attention now to ensure our schools remain safe and operational for years to come.”
The district remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining a high standard of stewardship and fiscal responsibility while continuing to provide a safe and effective learning environment for all students.
