Vietnam War veteran’s dedication honored by commissioners

A Vietnam War veteran and longtime county resident was honored just ahead of Memorial Day by the Logan County Commissioners with the presentation of the flag that flew over the Logan County Courthouse during April. 

Melvin Stratton of Zanesfield was recognized during the special ceremony at the commissioners’ office, with the tangible of gift of appreciation for this service in the U.S. Army from Commissioners Joe Antram, Mike Yoder and Greg Fitzpatrick. 

He was joined by his wife of 59 years, Nancy, along with his son Kevin Stratton; his daughter, Melissa and Matt Straker; granddaughter Makenna Straker; sister-in-law Annabelle Blum; and Darin and Kim Rees. 

The Middleburg native graduated from Logan Hills Schools (now Benjamin Logan) in 1964. 

He went on to serve active duty in the Army from 1965 to 1967, and was officially discharged in 1971. 

In addition to Basic Training, his military training included the Code of Conduct, Basic Airborne Training and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Threats Protection training. 

Mr. Stratton’s awards and commendations include the National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Other Logan County elected officials in attendance included Clerk of Courts Jackie Prater. Also attending the ceremony were representatives from the Logan County Veteran’s Service Office Amy Ricketts and Shelley Kneece; and commissioners’ office staff, Logan County Administrator David Henry and Administrative Clerk DeDe Doss.
