An Ada man whose Jeep became stuck in a ditch Sunday afternoon, May 4 along County Road 97 in the Belle Center area is now facing driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and other charges.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s office responded about 3:25 p.m. to a report of a stuck vehicle near 11451 C.R. 97.

As deputies arrived, they observed the driver of the Jeep attempting to drive out the ditch, which succeeded only in getting the vehicle more stuck and generating a large amount of smoke.

The driver, Cory Wilkins, 43, reportedly fell when exiting the Jeep and used it to stabilize himself while talking to deputies.

Wilkins refused to do field sobriety tests.

During contact with Wilkins and while searching of his Jeep, deputies detected odors of alcohol and burnt marijuana and well as observing several open containers of alcohol and a burnt marijuana “roach” in the vehicle. A small container of marijuana and a THC vape pen were also found on his person.

After being arrested and handcuffed, Wilkins became irate inside the sheriff cruiser.  He attempted to stand inside the cruiser, resisted deputies and had to be restrained when making efforts to exit the vehicle. The suspect also forcibly shook the cruiser several times while law enforcement waited for a tow truck to remove his vehicle.

Wilkins was belligerent with deputies while en route the Logan County Jail. He threatened corrections staff at the jail, became combative and was placed in a restraint chair.

In addition to OVI, the suspect was also charged with menacing and failure to control.
