Bellefontaine Middle School seventh-grader Owen Smith was named the top speller at Wednesday’s spelling bee at BMS, after he correctly spelled “boutique” in the eighth-round to win the contest.

Eighth-grader Eva Wilson was runner-up in the spelling bee, which featured 33 students in grades 6-8 at the school library.

Both students have qualified for the Logan County Spelling Bee at the Holland Theatre at 6 p.m. Jan. 13.

Owen will also take an online spelling and vocabulary test in February to advance toward the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He is a son of Nate and Kate Smith.

Eva is a daughter of Caleb and Karen Wilson.

Lindy Martin was the moderator at BMS. Stephanie Fissel and Julie Kurtz were the judges.

Bellefontaine Intermediate School will host its spelling bee Dec. 8.
