A Bellefontaine woman with a history of OVI convictions was arrested early Sunday morning after a series of traffic violations led to a stop by police.
Armenthia Adkins, 57, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and several other traffic violations, including failure to control, marked lanes violations and an open container violation.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department on patrol Sunday, Dec. 22, at approximately 1:29 a.m. reportedly observed a white Jeep make a wide turn onto South Detroit Street from West Auburn Avenue. The vehicle drifted across lanes multiple times and failed to properly stop at two stop signs. The erratic driving continued, and officers initiated a traffic stop near Iron Avenue.
Upon making contact with Adkins, officers noted a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and glossy eyes, and slurred speech. An open bottle of beer was also visible in the vehicle’s center console. Adkins admitted to consuming four bottles of Michelob Ultra earlier in the evening and described herself as “probably about a 2” on a scale of sobriety from 0 to 10.
Adkins refused to perform field sobriety tests or submit to breath or urine tests after her arrest. A review of her driving record revealed four prior OVI convictions from 2004, 2005, 2010, and 2021. She was informed of an automatic two-year driver’s license suspension effective immediately due to her refusal to provide chemical samples.
The vehicle was towed from the scene, and Adkins was transported to the police department, where she was later released to a sober driver.
