Troopers of the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are currently handling a one-vehicle fatal crash in Champaign County that occurred late Sunday evening, June 1, on State Route 235.
The driver of the vehicle, Jackson Scott, 18, of Quincy, succumbed to his injuries received in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
Landyn Thompson, a teenage passenger in the vehicle, also sustained injuries as a result of the crash and was flown by Careflight helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Landyn is in stable condition at the hospital with broken bones, a concussion and cuts and bruises, according to social media posts by relatives.
Preliminary reporting reveals that a 2009 Ford Focus operated by Scott was northbound on State Route 235 just north of State Route 29 about 11:37 p.m.
Scott reportedly swerved to avoid striking an animal and lost control of the vehicle, running off the roadway and striking a tree.
Both Scott and Thompson are each members of the Riverside High School Class of 2025 that graduated in May.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. This crash remains under investigation.
