Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mason M. Diener, 28, of Huntsville, on Feb. 10 following a trespass and domestic-related complaint at a residence on Findlay Street.

Deputies were dispatched after the victim reported Diener, her estranged husband, was knocking on the door despite being told he was not welcome at the residence. The victim told deputies she had filed for separation approximately two weeks earlier and said Diener had moved out about a month prior. She reported Diener appeared to be under the influence of drugs, was emotionally unstable and had recently sent her text messages that included a photo of what appeared to be a handgun, along with statements later determined to be suicidal in nature.

Deputies located Diener nearby and detained him without incident. No firearm was found on his person, though deputies observed items in the vehicle later determined to be an airsoft gun and a lighter shaped like a handgun. A small amount of marijuana was also recovered.

After contacting Diener’s probation officer, deputies placed him under arrest on an unrelated  probation violation incident and for domestic violence, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

He was transported to the Logan County Jail and lodged without further incident.

Reckless driving complaint leads to OVI arrest

Deputies arrested a Lima man Sunday evening following multiple reports of reckless driving that began in Logan County and ended with a traffic stop in neighboring Hardin County.

Braeden A. McGrady, 23, of Lima, was arrested Feb. 9 in relation to an operating-a-vehicle-while-impaired investigation after deputies received calls reporting a black pickup truck driving erratically along U.S. 33 and S.R. 117.

According to reports, a motorist traveling westbound on U.S. 33 reported the truck approached at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of his vehicle, then continued driving. Witnesses told deputies the truck was swerving, traveling left of center, entering a ditch and nearly striking multiple vehicles. One caller reported the driver appeared to be passed out at one point.

Deputies located the vehicle in Logan County and followed it as it crossed into Hardin County. The truck was slow to stop but eventually pulled over at the intersection of S.R. 117 and C.R. 200.

During contact with McGrady, deputies reported detecting the odor of marijuana and observed indicators of possible impairment, including disorganized speech and physical signs consistent with recent drug use. McGrady told deputies he had used marijuana the night before.

Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which deputies reported multiple indicators of impairment. Witnesses who stopped at the scene provided written statements describing the driver’s erratic behavior.

McGrady was taken into custody, and a search recovered a plastic straw and a small amount of marijuana. The vehicle was towed, and McGrady was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he provided a urine sample.

McGrady was issued citations for operating a vehicle while under the influence, driving under suspension with license forfeiture, and expired registration. He was held at the jail due to being from outside the area and inability to secure transportation.

• Deputies responded to minor injury, hit-skip crash late Feb. 4 in the 8000 block of County Road 91.

A 2020 Chevrolet Blazer traveling southeast about 11 p.m. drove off the left side of C.R. 91, struck a tree and came to rest. The driver left the scene prior to deputies’ arrival.

The driver was later identified as Zachary D. Case, 44, of Lewistown, who sustained suspected minor injuries. Information on whether medical treatment was sought was not immediately available.

Deputies reported the driver was distracted by something inside the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene by Wren’s Towing.

Case was cited for failure to maintain to control.

• Deputies responded to a welfare check Sunday afternoon at a residence on County Road 87 near Lakeview after a caller reported concerns about a possible mental health crisis.

According to reports, deputies were asked to check on an adult female who was described as being emotionally distressed and making statements related to self-harm. Deputies made contact with the individual, who was visibly upset and acknowledged making such statements but declined medical assistance and refused transport to a hospital.

Deputies reported they attempted multiple times to encourage the individual to seek help voluntarily. After those efforts were unsuccessful, deputies determined the individual could not be safely left alone and took her into custody for persistent disorderly conduct.

While being transported to the Logan County Jail, the individual reportedly became increasingly emotional and began kicking the partition inside the cruiser. Once at the jail, deputies observed injuries on her arm that were consistent with prior self-harm, according to the report.
