LEPC closes C.R. 5 for hazardous materials exercise Thursday

The Logan County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is conducting a full-scale Hazardous Materials Exercise from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 8.

As a result of this exercise, County Road 5 will be closed at the intersection with Township Road 127 in Jefferson Township during these hours.

Residents in the area may need to exit or enter using an alternate route for a period of several hours as the roadway will be blocked by emergency vehicles and live actors simulating injuries.

Motorists should use extreme caution if traveling in this area during the exercise, as responders and actors will be on the roadway.

“Emergency equipment and responders will be conducting operations surrounding a simulated accident. Please do not be concerned,” Logan County Emergency Management Agency Director Helen Norris said in a release.

“This is only an exercise that has been designed to test our plans for responding to an emergency involving a chemical release. Hazardous materials will not be used during this event.”

The exercise is being conducted in conjunction with responders from Tri-Valley Fire & EMS, Rushcreek Township Fire & EMS, Bokescreek Township Fire & EMS, Robinaugh EMS, the Logan County HazMat Team, Mary Rutan Hospital, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Logan County Emergency Management Agency and Benjamin Logan Schools.

If you are interested in volunteering as an actor in future exercises, would like to learn more about hazardous materials planning and response, or if you have questions, contact the Logan County LEPC at the Emergency Management Agency by calling (937) 593-5743.
