Home goods judging recognizes LoCo’s ‘best-kept secret’

Competitive bakers and candy makers gathered in the Grange building at the Logan County Fair on the morning of Tuesday, July 8, to find out who made this year’s winning sweet treats in the open class contest. For judge Margie Williams, who works part-time for Let’s Eat Cake in Urbana, it’s not an easy decision.

“I think Logan County has some amazing bakers,” Williams admitted. “This is the county’s best-kept secret.”

Nevertheless, the choices were made by Williams and fellow judge Alexahndria Vilcsek, owner of Lady Bug Sweets & Treats in Bellefontaine. Grand champion winners were Rebekah Smithers, olive oil cake; Amy Armentrout, white chocolate cherry cookies; Kensley Lacher, buckeyes (candy); Terri Mees, oatmeal cookies (baking made healthier); and Barb McKeen, cheesecake (specialty).

The recipients of reserve best of show were: Karla Johnson, yellow cake; Smithers, molasses cookies; Sharyn Kopf, cookies & cream fudge (candy); Mees, banana nut muffins (baking made healthier); and Susan Weikart, blondies (specialty).

All top prize winners will be auctioned off at 6 p.m. in the Grange building on Wednesday, July 9.

New shelves

During the competition, Eva Skaggs, chair of the home goods department, let attendees know the department is looking to replace their old shelves and is asking for donations.

“These shelves are over a decade old,” Skaggs explained. “The glass is breaking and they’re not wide enough.”

Hoping to get plexiglass this time, what they want will cost about $300. If they can get enough donations, Skaggs said, it will save the fair board having to cover it.
