Ralph E. Jackson of Alger, a 1970 Bellefontaine High School graduate and a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, served as the featured speaker for the Bellefontaine Memorial Day Ceremony Monday morning, May 26. He retired from active duty in 1992, and he encouraged those gathered at the Bellefontaine Cemetery to remember the cost of our freedom. “You have to remember who gave it to you,” he said, noting the humility and the humanity of “the fine people who have gone before us.” Robert Walker, emcee of the ceremony, noted the grave “markers tell us the story of those who came before us. Cherish the freedom they fought to preserve. It inspires us to be better versions of ourselves.” Jeff Willetts of Calvary Baptist Church offered an opening prayer and a benediction before “Taps” were played to close the service. “We’re amazed at the sacrifices. We’re so thankful for the men and women who have given so much and their families. Each one of them gives us a picture of You,” Pastor Willetts said, relating to Jesus’ death and ultimate sacrifice on the cross. (EXAMINER PHOTOS | Mandy Loehr)
