Four people were hospitalized following a crash Saturday, Feb. 15, involving two cars and a semi tractor-trailer that shut down State Route 117 for several hours and required a large emergency response.

The Huntsville Fire Department responded shortly after 7 a.m. to the 10000 block of S.R. 117 to a report of a crash in which the semi sustained heavy damage and caught fire. Flames were coming from the rear of the truck, Huntsville Fire Department reported.

The trailer became detached and was found overturned across the roadway. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze and the the Logan County HazMat Team responded to contain a diesel fuel leak.

Icy roads and hazardous travel conditions were reported early Saturday morning and may have been a contributing factor.

One person was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital. Three others were taken to Lima Memorial Hospital for treatment. The crash led to an extended road closure as authorities worked to investigate the cause and clear debris from the scene.

Richland Township and Bellefontaine fire departments, along with Indian Lake and BMRT EMS, Indian Joint Fire District, Logan County HazMat Team, deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted. The crash remains under investigation
