A local pedestrian was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in the intersection of east Sandusky Avenue and north Madriver Street at just after noon, Friday, Dec. 5.
Officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department report that Michael E. Hawkey, 78, of Bellefontaine was crossing the intersection on foot southbound on Madriver Street at 12:14 p.m when he was struck by a 2022 Toyota driven by Mariah L Richter, 46, of Lima, who was attempting to make a make a left-hand turn from south Madriver Street onto east Sandusky Avenue.
Police report that Hawkey sustained suspected serious injuries after being struck by the vehicle and was transported by Bellefontaine EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment. No update on his condition was available.
After investigation, it was learned that Hawkey did indeed have the right-of-way and Richter was cited for failure to obey a traffic signal.
