The Lady Raiders are not giving in.
Benjamin Logan got its second straight victory Wednesday, topping Triad 49-29 at home in nonleague girls basketball play.
Helping lead Ben Logan was senior Lahna Cook. Cook, who was recognized in a pregame ceremony, led all scorers with 15 points on the night.
Daylin Varner had 10, hitting three 3-pointers and Kyle Harner added seven.
Both teams have battled through adversity.
Ben Logan improves to 3-16. They won their season opener against Upper Scioto Valley. On Monday, they got a road win over Ridgemont.
“The kids never stopped working,” said Raiders coach Greg Saylor. “When you’re one-and forever, it’s pretty easy to fold up shop. And they don’t do that. They want to play. I love those kids.”
He noted that Ben Logan outrebounded Triad 36-18. “You control the boards like that and give yourself a couple extra opportunities like that, especially when you’re not playing well around the bucket, that’s a big help,” said Saylor.
The Lady Cardinals are now 4-16 on the season. Their wins have come over Shawnee in the opener, Northeastern early in December and Springfield Catholic Central at the end of the month, and another over Northeastern on Jan. 18.
Senior Abbey Overfield of Triad had 11 points. Gracie Martin scored six and Mia LeMay notched five.
The Lady Cardinals have just 10 players in all. Coach Erica Trainer noted that they have are currently dealing with injuries to a couple of those. “We just really didn’t take care of the basketball very well,” said Trainer. “We’re in the trenches. This one was one we were really hoping to get. We’ve got West Liberty on Saturday, and hope to be competitive. And then we close out with Ridgemont. We’re just going to try and do our best.”
Bre Parsons got the game’s first score shortly after the tap. At the other end, Cook drove for a score, was fouled, and hit the bonus shot.
It would stay that way for a while. Near the midpoint of the first quarter, Varner made one of two free throws, then connected on a three for a 7-2 lead.
Overfield answered with a hook shot, then Molly Siefring connected for the Raiders. A free throw by Triad’s Jazz Ford with 2:43 to go would prove to be the last point for the Cards in the first.
Ben Logan got a three by Cook and a two by Siefring, then a foul shot by Cook to go up 15-5.
Three-pointers, one by Cook and the other by Varner stretched that lead further early in the second period. Triad was held to scoring on free throws by Martin, Overfield and Parsons before Overfield connected on a hook shot with 3 1/2 minutes to go.
After another dry spell, the final minute saw Harner hit a jumper and Cook drain a three for the Raiders, while Overfield answered twice for Triad. At the intermission, Ben Logan led 26-15.
The third quarter was low scoring on both ends, with six points for Ben Logan and five for Triad, with most of that in the final two minutes. That allowed the Raiders to keep their lead in the low double digits.
LeMay banked in a jumper for Triad to start the final period. Cook got a layup in response. After a free throw by the Cards, Adilynne Gregg hit a shot, with Overfield driving the lane for two.
After another scoring exchange, Gregg scored twice, the second after battling for the rebound. Varner made a three and Harner got a free throw to push the lead to 46-27. Both teams sent in substitutes for the final minute of play.
There was no junior varsity game due to Triad’s limited numbers.
Ben Logan (0-8 Central Buckeye Conference, 3-16) has three games remaining in the regular season. They will face Shawnee at home on Saturday night, then travel to Trotwood-Madison on Monday, and close things out at Indian Lake next Wednesday.
Triad (3-12 Ohio Heritage Conference, 4-16) has two contests, both at home. They face West Liberty-Salem on Saturday and Ridgemont next Wednesday.
