The Bellefontaine City Council will consider a resolution at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9, authorizing the city to take part in the settlement against Purdue Pharma and the Sackler Family as a result of these companies’ involvement with exacerbating the opioid crisis.
In part, the resolution reads Purdue Pharma and the Sacker Family’s “distribution of opioids … was a significant cause of the national opioid crisis that lead to mass addiction and overdose deaths that affected … the State of Ohio, Logan County and the City of Bellefontaine.”
The settlement will pay funds to the State of Ohio and its political subdivisions (including Bellefontaine) and Tuesday’s resolution will allow the city to participate in the settlement agreements. The deadline for political subdivisions in Ohio to opt-in to the agreements is Sept. 30.
Also at the 7:30 p.m. meeting, the council will vote on a resolution notifying the Logan County Auditor of the city’s necessary tax levies, both under and above the 10-mill limitation.
The resolution indicates that the amounts approved by the Budget Committee that fall under the 10-mill limitation include: General Fund – $740,000 (2.4 mills), Police Pension Fund – $100,000 (0.3 mills) and the Fire Pension Fund – $100,000 (0.3 mills), totaling $940,000. At present, there are no city levies that exceed the 10-mill limitation.
Third readings and final votes will be taken on three measures at Tuesday’s meeting.
The first will make supplemental appropriations for the Bellefontaine Police Department, the second will replace pages in and update the codified city ordinances, while the third will authorize the city to enter into a emergency repair agreement with LeVan’s Excavating regarding a ruptured storm water line under Canby Street.
Also on the agenda Tuesday is the second reading of an ordinance that will approve the annexation of the Detrick Properties, 143.138 acres of land south of west Lake Avenue/County Road 11, and west Troy Road/ Township Road 216 in Harrison Township.
