Protesters gather at Courthouse Square for Medicaid rally

Approximately 20 protesters took to the Logan County Courthouse square from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, as part of a National Day of Action for Medicaid. Those gathered were opposed to the projected cuts to Medicaid that are part of President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” that was recently passed by Congress.

Kim Avery organized the protest, which also collected canned and non-perishable food – as well as cash and checks – for the Lutheran Community Services’ food pantry. The afternoon activities followed a Donuts with Dems event in the morning and a voter registration drive at the Logan County Democratic Party Office in The Marketplace downtown.

Avery said that that reduction or outright cuts in Medicaid payments will hit Logan County families where it hurts.

“Because of all the cuts to Medicaid, I don’t think people realize just how many people are going to be affected,” Avery said as protesters waved signs and chanted around her. “Nursing homes are going to close, rural hospitals are going to close.”

“It’s happening now,” Avery continued. “Nursing homes are already sending out letters to families saying ‘Medicaid is not paying anymore, so you have to get your family member out of here.’ Families in Logan County who depend on any kind of assistance from the state are going to have to make some hard choices when it comes to taking care of grandma or grandpa.”
