46 acres on city’s southeast side now part of city
Bellefontaine increased in size by just over 46 acres as the Bellefontaine City Council voted unanimously to accept the annexation of the LeVan Property on the southeast section of the city at its regular meeting Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The LeVan Property, totaling 46.376 acres, lies south of east Lake Avenue, east of Michigan Street and west of Ludlow Road/County Rd. 1.
The parcels annexed into the city are zoned as R-1 One Family Residence District and are expected to be developed into housing units, but definite plans on what kind of housing units are to be built on the annexed property have yet to be presented by the potential developers to the Planning Commission.
The council also passed a resolution declaring the city’s intention to provide services to 2.494 of acres of property adjacent to the city in Jefferson Township land that is expected to be annexed into the city.
In other action, council waived the three-reading rule and approved on its second reading and final vote a permanent appropriations ordinance for purposes of Bellefontaine Municipal Court and MRH Endowment special projects, and passed two other pieces of legislation, both on their third readings and final votes, the first authorizing the Service-Safety Director and Fire Chief to issue a promissory note from Fund 410 (Capital Improvement #2) to Fund 610 (Wastewater Department), while the second was an ordinance vacating approximately 150-feet of on east-west public alley in the 500 block of Hamilton Street.
All of the measures passed without a dissenting vote.
The city also moved closer establishing nine new positions for both the police and fire departments, as it passed on its second reading a measure that would create those positions for each of the departments.
In his report, Service/Safety Director Wes Dodds reminded council that should the ordinance for those 18 positions pass on its final reading at the next regular meeting, this will not necessarily mean that both departments will be filling those positions immediately, given the rigorous process of finding, recruiting and training qualified applicants.
The Bellefontaine City Council is scheduled to meet again in regular session at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26.
