Man gets OVI then domestic charge less than two days apart
A Lakeview man arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs Sunday, June 8 was then arrested in a separate incident Tuesday, June 10, for domestic violence, deputies report.
John Sheeley, 54, was arrested for OVI about 8:30 p.m. Sunday near his residence at Big Bear campgrounds, 15147 N. State Route 235, following a traffic stop.
A caller earlier contacted deputies to report they witnessed a man attempting to enter the closed liquor store at 136 S. Main St., Lakeview. The man, later identified as Sheeley, left the store, got into his 2013 Acura car and a short time later was driving erratically and recklessly behind the caller’s vehicle on S.R. 235.
At one point, Sheeley’s car traveled off the road, re-entered it and cut off another vehicle, the caller told deputies.
During the stop, deputies noticed an odor of alcohol coming from Sheeley.
Sheeley initially denied drinking alcohol, and then told deputies he had been “casually” drinking vodka throughout the day.
The driver used the car door to lift himself out of the vehicle and was unsteady on his feet.
He refused field sobriety testing and was taken to the Logan County Jail, where he was released to a sober driver.
About 4:16 p.m. Tuesday, deputies were called to Sheeley’s residence on a report of an intoxicated man.
Sheeley’s mother, who had left the residence, told deputies her son had threatened to harm her and that he was “dangerous” when drinking. She also expressed concern for Sheeley’s wellbeing.
The suspect was arrested for domestic violence and taken to the Logan County Jail.
The jail staff refused to lodge the suspect over concerns his alcohol problems may result in detoxification at the facility.
He was issued a summons for the charge and released to a family member.
