Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1, and claimed the life of a West Liberty man.
Robert Leon Eubanks, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union County Coroner.
Troopers said the crash occurred sometime after 3 p.m. on State Route 287 near the Logan County line, in Allen Township, Union County.
The preliminary investigation revealed a silver 2007 Kia Sorento operated by Eubanks was traveling eastbound on S.R. 287 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, going airborne, crashing into several trees and a creek bed.
The vehicle came to final rest on its top.
Due to the ravine and thick wood line, the vehicle could barely be seen from the road, troopers said.
A passerby observed what he thought may have been a vehicle as he was driving by. After turning around to check the area, it was confirmed the vehicle had crashed.
It was determined that Eubanks was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, troopers said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Allen Township Fire & EMS, Union County Coroner and Kevin’s Towing.
