The West Liberty-Salem and Fairbanks volleyball teams faced off Tuesday night with the Ohio Heritage Conference North division on the line.
The match was tightly contested. Fairbanks rallied to win the first set 26-24.
The Lady Tigers then won 25-17 and 25-23, before the Panthers took the fourth, 25-22.
The fifth set tiebreaker was 15-13 in favor of Fairbanks.
However, as the final points were being played, it was discovered that one of the Fairbanks players had played more the maximum number of sets allowed, which is six.
The player had been in two sets for the JV match and then all five of the varsity sets.
Rules officials were contacted by cellphone, but a final determination by the Ohio High School Athletic Association has yet to be made. It is expected to be decided on Wed, Oct. 1.
If West Liberty-Salem is awarded the win, they would clinch a share of the division title.
