Thaddeus’ story at the heart of WL-Salem Kids Heart Challenge

Students at West Liberty-Salem Elementary School are putting their hearts into helping others as the school kicks off the Kids Heart Challenge on Friday, Jan. 31.

The American Heart Association annual program combines physical activity, heart-healthy education and community service, with this year’s local goal set at raising $20,000 to support life-saving heart research and education. Throughout the challenge, students will learn age-appropriate lessons about caring for their hearts while participating in fun activities tied to fitness and teamwork.

This year’s effort carries a deeply personal connection for the school community.

Fourth-grader Thaddeus has been named a “Heart Hero” for the event. Born with tricuspid atresia, a complex congenital heart condition, Thaddeus has already undergone four heart surgeries and continues to receive ongoing cardiac care. Despite the challenges, he remains active, enjoys playing football and is a proud Cincinnati Bengals fan. School officials say his resilience and positive spirit have been an inspiration to classmates and staff alike.

Tricuspid atresia is a rare congenital heart condition in which a valve on the right side of the heart does not form properly, disrupting normal blood flow to the lungs for oxygen. Treatment often involves a series of surgeries to redirect blood flow and support circulation. While lifelong medical care is typically required, advances in treatment have greatly improved outcomes and quality of life.

Families and community members are encouraged to support the fundraiser by sponsoring a student or helping their child register to participate. Proceeds from the Kids Heart Challenge benefit heart research, education and programs aimed at improving outcomes for children with congenital heart conditions.

School officials said the event is an opportunity for students to learn empathy, healthy habits and the power of giving back — lessons that extend well beyond the gym floor.

As the challenge gets underway, the Tiger community is hoping to show that even small acts of generosity can make a big difference, one heart at a time
