Proposal for new municipal pool comes before city council Tuesday

After months of discussions, discourse and dialogue, an ordinance that will direct the service/safety director to seek bids for the design and construction of a new municipal pool will be introduced at the regular meeting of the Bellefontaine City Council at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The current Hoffman Pool has reached the end of its life span and both the council and the Parks and Recreation Department have for some time studied the subject of financing a new facility. Tuesday will mark the official beginning of the proposal for the design and construction of the new pool with the introduction and first reading of Ordinance 25-69, which will allow bids to be submitted and get the ball rolling on the new facility.

The estimated cost will be $750,000. The design and construction will be paid for from the city’s Fund 430 – Recreation Improvements.

Also to be introduced at Tuesday’s meeting is an ordinance that will target vehicles that park illegally in the downtown Bellefontaine area. Businesses and residents have long complained of the haphazard parking choices that are often made by motorists downtown, especially failure to park within marked spaces and the presence of delivery vehicles, which tend to take up several spaces and often jump the curb.

The ordinance that is to be introduced for a first reading Tuesday strengthens Section 351.05 of the city’s Codified Ordinances, allowing police to take appropriate action when parking violations are noted.

There are no ordinances up for a third reading and final vote on the council’s schedule for Tuesday, but one resolution, which will establish new expense accounts for the West TIF and Main St. TIF, will be before the council.

The public is encouraged to attend.
