Bellefontaine High School students and staff teamed up to fight cancer during their annual Relay for Life at AcuSport Stadium Friday afternoon, May 23.
Attendees walked a lap around the track and then enjoyed other activities. Seven student groups organized games or sold food at nine booths around the stadium.
The one-hour Relay Celebration raised $1,182 (including money from T-shirt sales). May 23 was also the last day of classes for seniors.
The BHS Relay for Life is organized by teacher Michelle Rohrer and National Honor Society members. Rohrer noted that this year, it was extra important to have a good turnout, as some of the money raised will also be donated the Battle Pups organization.
“Everyone that we know has been touched by cancer in some capacity, so being able to raise money while having fun is always a win in my book,” she said.
“Even though the weather wasn’t the best, we managed to raise some good funds to go to some worthy causes.”
NHS members created signs to advertise Relay for Life, along with designing a T-shirt to help raise money.
“As the National Honor Society adviser, Relay is one of our big events that we organize for the school year,” Rohrer said. “Our members worked hard to gather the other clubs in the building to participate in the event. The student members really stepped up to make this event a success.”
The Relay for Life is the national fundraising branch of the American Cancer Society. Its mission is to support cancer patients, raise awareness about the causes of cancer and the importance of early screening, and fund research for new treatments.
