Three-year-old Dagny Greer of Urbana has the chance to explore colorful autumn landscapes with her family this fall, and next year, to see spring buds and summer blooms on her new tricycle, especially fitted for her needs.
Several area groups and organizations joined together Saturday, Oct. 18, at Melvin Miller Park in Urbana to make the presentation of an Amtryke to Dagny and her parents, Charlie Greer and Lydia Hess.
The Amtryke was especially designed by Jake Schumacher of Ambucks, and was made possible through donations from the Kiwanis Club of Champaign County, Bellefontaine Kiwanis Club, Greenbucks, Ambucks, Bellefontaine Moose Lodge #2563 and the Harold Kerr American Legion Post #173.
Ambucks is the national organization that produces the Amtrykes special needs tricycles. Greenbucs is the Greene County Chapter of Ambucs that assembles the Amtrykes.
Dagny’s parents first suspected she had achondroplasia before she was born, but didn’t get confirmation until January 2022 when she was 3 months old.
Her mother, Lydia, said it was a shock to learn about her dwarfism, but they are figuring it out one day at a time and the Board of DD has been a huge help to them.
Dagny sees some of the world’s best specialists at Cincinnati Children’s and Akron Children’s Hospitals, her family noted.
Although Dagny is only the size of a 1-year-old, she is fiercely independent and likes to do things on her own, according to her parents. She’s an aspiring woodswoman, thanks to her grandfather Steve, who she calls “PawPaw,” and has asked for another tool set for Christmas.
