Some Logan and Champaign County churches will observe Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, with services scheduled throughout the day and evening to mark the beginning of the Lenten season, a 40-day period of prayer, reflection and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter.
Ash Wednesday is observed by many Christian denominations and is traditionally marked by the imposition of asheson the forehead, often in the shape of a cross. The ashes serve as a symbol of human mortality, humility and repentance, reminding worshippers of the call to spiritual renewal during Lent.
