SSA Director Jason Moyer announced at the Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ October meeting that the board has received a Keep Families Together Grant in the amount of $35,000.
This grant is designed to support children and families who are at risk of out-of-home placement due to behavioral, developmental or other challenges.
Its primary purpose is to provide flexible, community-based services and resources that help families stay together safely and strengthen family stability. Enrollment numbers are at an all-time high at LCBDD, with 704 individuals receiving services, officials noted.
Superintendent Krista Oldiges reported that the West Liberty Lions Club will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new restroom facility at Lions Club Park on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m. The board contributed funding and provided a universal changing table for the project, making it the first restroom in Logan County to feature this accessibility option.
Oldiges also said at the Logan County Board of DD Foundation meeting last month, they discussed joining the Logan County Education Foundation and offering graduating seniors in Logan County the opportunity to be awarded a $1,500 scholarship for students going into social work, special education, behavioral science, psychology, or human services.
The foundation is hopeful to offer this scholarship to students graduating in the spring of 2026.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. To help share the message, awareness efforts will include newspaper features, digital billboard advertisements, and radio spots.
The month will conclude with a Sensory Friendly Movie at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Bellefontaine Cinema.
The board will be replacing three HVAC units at the Discovery Center. When this project is completed, all HVAC units at the facility will have been updated.
The board’s recent fire inspection had no issues reported.
The Special Olympics Unified Bowling Team participated in a bowling tournament at Tiffin University and brought home second place.
SSA Director Moyer reported that he has met with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) counselors to review their new digital referral process, which may help facilitate quicker and more efficient employment placements.
The board reviewed and approved the financials for August 2025, noting that the Star Ohio Account at West Con is holding funds that are for planned playground improvement projects as well as funds planned for services and DODD waiver match expenses.
Prior to the board meeting, LCBDD’s Business Director Kari Eckard reviewed the proposed 2026 budget as part of the annual required board training for the year.
A community blood drive is planned for Thursday, Oct. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1851 State Route 47 West, Bellefontaine. Appointments can be made at www.donortime.com with the SPNR Code 1417.
The Early Intervention Department partnered with the Family and Children First Council at their recent Parkside Pals event. FCFC brought winter coats for families in need.
There will be a free Developmental Screening for children birth through Pre-K from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16. Those interested in having their child screened can reach out to the Early Intervention Department by calling (937) 292-3065 to schedule a time.
Recently, Early Intervention families were invited to a day at Marmon Valley Farm. Riding horses helps strengthen core muscles, improves balance, coordination, and posture. Interaction with animals can help children manage emotions and reduce anxiety.
Preschool Director Lisa Sulich reported that the 2025-2026 preschool school year has started and there are currently 126 preschoolers enrolled.
Ms. Sulich announced that Dominos reached out to the preschool and offered to provide pizzas once a month for the classrooms. The West Liberty Lions Club is also donating sensory balls to the preschool.
The preschool will have a therapy dog visit one classroom on a trial basis. Pending positive outcomes, visits may be extended to all classrooms.
In personnel matters, Human Resources Director Staci Nichols reported that Brandi Hamilton started on Sept. 15 as a Service and Support Administrator taking on an adult caseload. The board approved a contract with Mark Rodney Productions, Memorandum of Understanding with the Midwest Educational Service Center, as well as the Title XX Grant Agreement. The 2026 budget and 2026–2028 salary schedule were approved.
