The Pirates and Vikings clashed, with the latter doing a bit more damage.
Riverside lost to visiting Miami East 9-3 Friday in a Three Rivers Conference softball matchup.
Miami East sits atop the TRC and remains undefeated at 8-0 in league games. They are now 15-3 overall.
The Lady Pirates held the visitors to just one run through the first five, but they broke through in the final two.
Riley Dillon went all seven for Riverside, allowing 10 hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.
She also hit a solo home run. Aubree Huston had two hits, Miah Carman knocked in one with a double, and Jadyen Hoffer got the third RBI.
Jacqueline Kadel picked up the victory for the Lady Vikings. She permitted five hits and five walks, and got six strikeouts.
Riverside coach Andy Phelps was pleased despite the outcome. He noted that Miami East won by run-rule in the first meeting.
“They are ranked in the state in Division V,” he said. “We battled with them. We went toe to toe. (Kadel) is a great pitcher. She leads the league in strikeouts, ERA, everything. And we put the ball in play. We made them shake for a while. So I’m really proud of how our girls played.”
Whitni Enis led off for Miami East by beating out an infield hit, and promptly stole second. She later moved to third on a pitch in the dirt, and scored on a a liner to left by Kylie Gents.
Riverside put a couple runners aboard in the bottom half, but did not score.
In the second, Jorgia Roeth reached on an error. Dillon struck out the next batter, then Tenly Potter was ruled out for leaving the box early after a bunt attempt. Enis got another infield hit, but Dillon struck out Kadel. The Pirates left one on in the bottom half.
Riverside’s defense was solid in the third, with a catch by Hoffer in center, a force play by Carman at short and Emilee Robinson at second, and Huston handling a grounder to first.
The top of the order came up for the Pirates with Dillon drawing a walk, and Chloe Purtee gong in to run. Robinson sacrificed her to second, and Huston followed a single that dropped in shallow right.
Hoffer’s grounder to short was fired across for the first out, but Purtee timed it well and slid under the tag attempt to tie the game.
Taylor Dillon got a walk. Courtesy runner Kara Klinger was called out for interference on a grounder hit by Brook Hunkler.
Both sides went in order in the fourth.
After holding Miami East to a single in the top half, Riley Dillon wasted no time. She belted the first pitch she saw over the fence in straightaway center, giving the Pirates a 2-1 advantage. Kadel bore down and got the next three batters.
Gentis was hit by a pitch to start the sixth as Miami East’s hitters were facing Dillon for the third time.
She moved to second on a groundout, then Jorgia Roeth got aboard on an error. Alli Rose smacked a double into right, putting the Vikings back ahead 3-2.
After a walk, they got runs on an error on Enis’ grounder, and a single by Radel. Enis stole third. Jaila Thurman struck out, but Taylor Dillon had to throw to first to complete the strikeout.
Enis sped home and slid in to make it 6-2. Phelps questioned the call, but it was upheld.
In the home half, Taylor Dillon walked to open it and switched places with Klinger.
Hunkler drove a ball to the fence in right field, which Enis was not able to catch up with. A wild pitch moved both up a base.
A grounder by Jaidyn Jackson was sent to the plate in time to get Klingler out. Two batters later, Carman doubled to left-center, with Hunkler coming around to make it 6-3.
In the seventh, a misplayed grounder was followed by a triple by the Vikings’ Jersey Cutlip. She later scored on a groundout, and a single and double added one more tally.
Aubree Huston popped up to second, while Kadel retired Hoffer and Taylor Dillon on comebackers to seal the victory.
Riverside hosts Covington today at 11 a.m.
