Defendant intends to appeal vedict and sentence
Logan County Common Pleas Court Judge Kevin P. Braig on Tuesday, Nov. 18, ordered Sylvia Inskeep to serve seven to eight years in prison and pay $1,500 in restitution for a meth-driven burglary at a farmhouse near West Liberty.
On Oct. 10, a jury found Inskeep guilty of complicity to burglary, complicity to three counts of grand theft of firearms, and complicity to two counts of aggravated possession of drugs. Jurors concluded that she aided and abetted Edward Morgan in the crimes. Evidence at trial included video footage showing Inskeep using methamphetamine with Morgan in the parking lot of the South Main Street McDonald’s in Bellefontaine on the afternoon of the burglary.
In issuing the sentence, Judge Braig described the offenses as “serious crimes” and said the victims suffered significant financial, mental, and emotional harm. He also noted that the actions of Inskeep and Morgan resembled organized criminal activity in the way the burglary and thefts were planned and executed. The judge further emphasized that Inskeep was free on bond from an unrelated Union County indictment at the time of the Logan County offenses.
During sentencing and in her pre-sentence investigation report, Inskeep downplayed her involvement and said she would not have participated if not for what she called her “toxic relationship” with Morgan. She stated she intends to appeal both the verdict and the sentence.
Morgan was previously sentenced by Judge Braig to 15 to 18 years in prison for his role in the crimes and for a separate burglary case.
Logan County prosecutors Nathan Yohey and Nick Williams represented the state. Inskeep was represented by Urbana-based attorney Addie King.
