Officers of the Washington Township Police Department report Sam Helmick, 57 of Troy, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 6.
About 3 p.m., officers were on patrol on State Route 708 and State Route 235 and conducted a traffic stop on Helmick for a stop sign violation.
Upon making contact with him, signs of impairment were observed. Helmick refused to exit the vehicle and was eventually escorted out of the vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle, he refused to submit to field sobriety tests. A search of his vehicle was conducted and an open container of alcohol was recovered.
The defendant was taken into custody and transported to the Logan County Jail. Once at the jail, he reportedly refused to submit to a breath test. He was also was cited for a stop sign violation and was released to a sober driver.
