There’s something about championship teams — they don’t panic. They don’t splinter when shots won’t fall. They don’t blink when the other side starts raining threes.
They wait. They defend. And when the moment comes, they take it.
That was the story Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28, as the West Liberty-Salem girls basketball team turned three frustrating quarters into a roaring fourth, storming past Ansonia 51-41 to capture the Southwest 2 District Championship — the third district title in program history.
For much of the game, played at Monroe High School, it didn’t look like it would be the Lady Tigers’ afternoon.
The first half was a grind. WL-Salem struggled to generate clean looks, and when they did, the shots refused to fall. Meanwhile, Ansonia found its rhythm from beyond the arc, knocking down timely three-pointers to seize control and build a 26-19 lead at halftime.
But championship DNA has a way of surfacing.
The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with purpose, stringing together a quick 4-0 run and ratcheting up the defensive pressure. Possessions became more physical. Passing lanes disappeared. The energy shifted.
The Tigers chipped away methodically, trimming the deficit to just two points, 30-28, entering the final quarter. Close enough to feel it. Close enough to believe.
The fourth quarter began as a tug-of-war, each possession carrying more weight than the last. With five minutes to play, the game was tied — and that’s when the Lady Tigers slammed the door.
Defensively, they were relentless. Offensively, they were composed. Over the decisive stretch, West Liberty-Salem outscored Ansonia 16-6, controlling tempo and executing with poise. Every stop felt bigger than the last. Every basket edged them closer.
When the final horn sounded, it wasn’t just a win. It was a statement.
Senior leadership once again anchored the charge. Arianna Weaver paced the offense with 14 points, while Addi Wallen and Ava Astorino each added 12. Ava Poppe contributed 10 crucial points, and Ellery Wygal chipped in three in the championship effort.
At 22-3, West Liberty-Salem now turns its attention to the Southwest 2 Regional Semifinals, where the Lady Tigers will face Fayetteville on Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. at Springfield High School.
But Saturday belonged to them.
Ava Astorino flexed with the district trophy in hand. Wallen, Poppe and Astorino climbed the ladder to cut down the nets — a tradition earned, not given.
Three quarters of adversity. One quarter of dominance.
Champions are defined in moments like that.
