Fairlawn sinks Lady Pirates in tourney opener

Fairlawn pulled away in the second half to defeat Riverside 54–38 on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Division VII, Southwest District, Region 28 girls basketball tournament action.

The Jets set the tone early, scoring 15 points in the opening quarter while limiting the Lady Pirates to four. Riverside struggled at the free-throw line in the first period, converting just 2 of 10 attempts.

Riverside responded in the second quarter behind the outside shooting of sophomore Kenzie Stotler, who connected on three 3-pointers. The surge cut the deficit to three points at halftime, with Fairlawn holding a 20–17 edge.

Fairlawn regained control coming out of the break, using a balanced offensive attack to score 15 points in the third quarter and extend its lead to 35–24.

The Lady Pirates made a final push in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points, but were unable to slow Fairlawn’s offense. The Jets added 19 points in the final frame to secure the win.

Stotler led Riverside with 15 points, while Emily Robinson added 12. Riverside closed the season with a 4–19 record.

With the win, Fairlawn advances to face Fort Loramie, the No. 3 seed, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in a district semifinal matchup.
