Jan. 29: Shirts in Shawn’s memory to be worn at sixth-grade basketball game; 8 p.m. tipoff
The community is coming together to remember Shawn Humphrey, an 11-year-old Indian Lake sixth grader whose death over the weekend has deeply affected classmates, teachers and families across the district.
A public show of support is planned during the boys sixth-grade basketball game Thursday, Jan. 29, at Indian Lake Elementary School. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Friends and community members are encouraging those who attend to wear white T-shirts in Shawn’s honor, featuring “Shawn” on the front, “Humphrey” on the back and the number “7” on the sleeve. Organizers emphasized that wearing a shirt is optional and that the most important gesture is simply being present to support Shawn’s family and classmates.
An outpouring of support has continued on social media, including a post from Tara Cascioli, the mother of one of Shawn’s friends, who expressed hope that the gym will be “filled with love” as students and community members gather in his memory.
Several local groups have also stepped forward to assist the family.
The Washington Township Police Officers Association announced it will donate $10 for each student wearing a memorial T-shirt, with proceeds going directly to the Humphrey family. Boaters Helping Boaters and The Abigail Dague Scholarship Fund have each pledged to match those donations at $10 per student, up to $500.
The game had originally been scheduled earlier in the week but was postponed due to school closures.
As the community continues to grieve, messages of unity and compassion have emphasized the importance of showing up for Shawn’s friends, classmates and loved ones during a difficult time.
Community members are encouraged to share information about the gathering and attend if able.
