Bellefontaine tops Urbana wrestlers in Battle of 68

The Bellefontaine high school and middle school boys wrestling teams both defeated Urbana on Wednesday in the Battle of 68.

This is the 11th year for the rivalry trophy. Bellefontaine has now won nine of the 11.

The varsity won 54-27, while the middle schoolers came out on top 36-24.

“Our guys really stepped up and delivered tonight,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt. “These guys rededicated themselves this week and showed what they were capable of. We moved guys around a little too higher weights to help the team. They understood it was going to take everyone to get this done tonight.”

“Hayden Alinson, Andrew Larison, and Ricky Smiley delivers some key pins in the middle weights,” said LaBatt. “I was real proud of those guys. It was good for us to have some team success tonight so I hope all these guys enjoy it.”

Jared Young (126), Andrew Larison (138), Hayden Alinson (150) and Zavier May (165) all won by pin, and Ricky Smiley (144) got a tech fall.

Winning by forfeit were Brooks Kinchen (113), Caleb Lillard (157), Noah Torsell (190) and Zaid Legon (215). Braidyn Coulson got a pin in an exhibition match at 132.

Others in action for the Chiefs were Jeffrey Smith (120), Eli Deal (132), Drake Hoon (175) and Cameron Hensley (285).

Getting pins for middle school were Dean Buffkin (98), Noah King (128), Ru Lyburtus (150) and Isaac Merrin (160). River Phillips (104), Cale Middlesworth (134) and Hunter Werling (142) were unopposed.

The Chieftain Duals will be held today starting at 9 a.m. The middle school team will be at Shawnee for the CBC meet.

BOWLING

Bellefontaine splits with London

Bellefontaine’s bowling teams wrapped up the conference action for the season Friday by facing London.

The Lady Chieftains won their match, 2,616 to 2,358 and improved to 14-1 on the year.

Leading the way was Gracie Hood with a 419 series (182-237), then Haylee Yelton at 402 (224-178). Next was Chloe Heminger with 398 (176-222), and Nevaeh LaFollette with 328 (181-147). Avery Mullins had a 156 game.

The junior varsity won 2,096 to 1,548. Kinzie Bernard (181-179) and Addison Prosser (169-191) both had 360 series. Isabelle Gunnett had 324 (168-156) and Kyra Moon rolled a 129 game.

London defeated the Bellefontaine boys, 2,813 to 2,513. The Chieftains’ record is 4-12.

Alex Moon led the Chieftains with a 417 series (220-197), followed by Alex Williams at 387 (184-203), Colton Wisner with 376 (163-213) and Rory Pierce at 329 (159-170). Paul Lafollette had a 246 game and Jacob Lynch got a 144 game.

The Central Buckeye Conference tournament will be held Feb. 7 at Northridge Lanes.

Raiders earn split 

Benjamin Logan faced North Union in the last conference match of the year, with each side’s varsity winning one.

The Raiders boys rolled a season best total with 3,032 pins to North Union’s 2,257. They finished 14-2 in the league and are 15-2 overall.

Jarrett Buckenroth had the high series with 470 (258-212), Caleb Knight knocked down 453 (216-237), Nate Davis had 429 (238-191), Dylan Stewart fired a 424 (200-224), and Landon Stoodt had a 406 (203-203).

The JV boys won 2,301 to 2,019 and are 11-4 for the year.

Wyatt LeVan had a 388 (163-225), followed by Colton Klopfenstein with 341 (160-181), then Conner Chambers with 327 (180-147), Pierce Jenkins with 291 (154-137) and Jace Lyons with 261 (139-122).

The boys will host Fort Loramie on Tuesday.

North Union’s girls had a total of 2,309 to Ben Logan’s 2,261. They are 6-8 in the CBC and 6-9 overall.

Aubrey Zedlitz had a 362 series (179-183), followed by Lorali Klopfenstein with 333 (171-162). Other game scores were Maddy Hamm 173, Jacey Koehler 150, Reigan Thomas 148, Hunter McColloch 139 and Kaelyn Corwin 135.

The JV girls won 1,424 to 1,343. Scores included Kaydon Wilber 264 (124-140), Gi Saunders 233 (117-116), Natalie Chapman 123 game and Kailey McCollough 122 game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lady Tigers lose to West Jeff

West Liberty-Salem lost 51-35 to West Jefferson in Ohio Heritage Conference play Thursday.

West Jefferson held WL-S to two points in the first quarter and led 20-13 at the half. They then put up 22 points in the third.

Ava Astorino had 13 points, Addi Wallen eight, Maddie McGill five, Ava Poppe four, Ava Johnson three and Arianna Weaver two for West Liberty-Salem.

The Tigers won the JV game 32-10. Lucy Cole had 13 points.

West Liberty-Salem (9-5 OHC, 12-6 overall) will visit Triad this evening at 6 p.m. It is a varsity only contest.

Riverside falls to Miami East

Riverside lost 49-25 in a Three Rivers Conference contest Thursday.

The Vikings led by six after one and 24-9 at halftime.

Avery Perk had 11 points and Made Lemly scored six for the Pirates.

Miami East won the JV game 16-8.

Riverside (1-11 TRC, 4-14) is at Covington at 11 a.m. today.

WRESTLING

Lakers defeat Parkway

Indian Lake won its final home dual meet of the season, beating Parkway 60-23 on Wednesday.

Winning for the Lakers were Cash Scott (106), Brayden Riffle (113), Jordan Henderson (120), Keshawn Blackwell (126), Bronx Dickson (132), Draden Stevenson (138), Czar Dickson (157), Tristan Shoffner (190), Owen Pummel (215) and Christopher Timms (285).

Pummel got the 150th win of his career. He joins his brother Hayden as Lakers who have reached that milestone.
