Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a hit-skip crash reported about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Jennings Farley & Seeley Funeral Home, 5591 U.S. Route 68, West Liberty.
According to a crash report, an unknown vehicle drove into the funeral home parking lot and struck several objects while apparently attempting to turn around.
The vehicle traveled over decorative landscaping rocks, through the grass and over a tree before striking a large rectangular sign for the business, causing significant property damage.
Investigators believe the suspect vehicle may have been a dual-rear-wheel truck, based on ruts left in the grass.
The driver fled the scene after the crash. Deputies noted vehicle fluid left on the parking lot surface indicated the vehicle likely sustained significant damage.
A trail of fluid suggested the vehicle left the property and traveled north toward Bellefontaine, according to the report.
The funeral home owner told deputies surveillance cameras facing the parking lot were not working at the time, but technicians were expected to attempt to retrieve footage.
A nearby resident’s camera captured a white pickup truck leaving the lot about 8:50 a.m. and heading north. However, due to a lag in the camera’s motion activation and grainy video quality, the footage did not show the vehicle damaging any property.
The crash remains under investigation.
