From the Jan. 26, 1976, edition of the Bellefontaine Examiner:

WINTER “FUN” — One has to really enjoy the outdoors to spend a night in a tent and a day in the chilling cold like this, which was experienced over the weekend by more than 80 Logan county Boy Scouts and their adult leaders.

The scene was one of the camping grounds at Chippewa State Park, Indian Lake, where the Scouts gathered for their annual Winter Fun events known as a “Klondike Derby.” The competition was conducted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, but many of the Scouts and their leaders stayed on through the night to awaken Sunday to a downpour of freezing rain.

Seemingly not bothered by elements of the “ Ol’ Man Winter” were the four youngsters pictured above as they prepared to wash their stomachs with toasted sandwiches and soup. They are left to right: Joe and Tom McPherson, Kevin Amerine and Dave Hollenbach (bench standing), all of Troop 94, Bellefontaine. The lower photo (not shown) shows Jim Stoner of Rushsylvania, as he pushed the Troop 51 sled across the snow while other members of his unit were eating in the background.

Seven Boy Scout troops participated in the events, and the winner was Troop 51 of Rushsylvania. Second was Troop 94, Bellefontaine, followed by Troop 182, Bellefontaine, Troop 116, Lakeview, and Troop 74 of Belle Center, all of which tied for third place. Fourth was Troop 84, Russells Point, and fifth was Troop 26, Huntsville.

Across “campus” at the Chippewa State Park were more than 120 Cub Scouts who enjoyed their annual Winter outing, too. Results of events conducted there were the new Quincy-DeGraff pack, first; Pack 83, West Liberty, Webelos, second; and Pack 116, Den 5 of Lakeview, third.
