IL State Park officials share ice safety reminder
Emergency crews responded Saturday evening, Jan. 24, to a report of a snowmobile that entered the waters of Indian Lake near Turkeyfoot Drive and Township Road 293.
According to emergency personnel, the snowmobile went into the water approximately 200 yards from shore around 7 p.m. Two individuals were involved in the incident.
Responders said both individuals were able to get out of the water, climb back onto the ice, and walk safely back to shore. They were evaluated at the scene by Indian Lake EMS and declined medical transport. No serious injuries were reported.
Authorities emphasized that ice conditions on Indian Lake are currently unsafe, noting numerous open areas of water across the lake. Officials cautioned that snowmobiling on the lake is not safe at this time and urged the public to use extreme caution.
Snowmobiling rules and safety reminders
There are no designated snowmobile or APV trails at Indian Lake State Park. However, snowmobiling is permitted on the frozen lake surface and along ditches on the west and south banks between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., provided conditions are safe.
Snowmobiles must have a current registration. Riders are urged to remain alert for open water, reduce speed, and watch for pedestrians on foot.
Officials also reminded the public that no ice is completely safe. General ice safety guidelines include:
-
0–3 inches: Stay off the ice
-
4 inches: One person with gear
-
5 inches: Small group, spread out
-
6 inches: One snowmobile
-
9 inches: Multiple snowmobiles
