Horses rescued from icy pond

MECHANICSBURG — A coordinated, multi-agency rescue saved the lives of two horses that fell through the ice on a pond Saturday night in the 1000 block of South Parkview Road.

At approximately 8:57 p.m. on Dec. 13, first responders were dispatched to the scene during below-freezing temperatures and a Level 2 snow emergency. According to authorities, the horses had broken through the ice and were submerged up to their necks, creating a life-threatening situation for the animals.

The rescue effort was led by the Mechanicsburg Fire Department, with assistance from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. Despite hazardous road conditions and extreme cold, responders worked methodically and collaboratively to stabilize and recover the animals.

Lt. McConnell’s body-worn camera captured the operation, which required careful coordination, persistence, and teamwork among all involved. After an extended effort, both horses were successfully removed from the icy water and brought to safety.

Officials expressed appreciation for the agencies on scene as well as community members who assisted during the rescue.

The incident underscores the dedication of local first responders and residents to protect life—both human and animal—even under the most challenging winter conditions.
