A Xenia man’s birthday celebration was perhaps a little less festive after he was arrested Monday night, July 21, for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs after a crash.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the one-vehicle crash about 9:10 p.m. on County Road 38 near State Route 117.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a female, later identified as a passenger in the vehicle, stumbling on C.R. 38. She then fell into a ditch along the road.

Jacob Gooding, who turned 22 years old today, July 22, told deputies the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta he was driving got stuck in a ditch along C.R. 38 when he attempted to turn around.

Gooding was southbound on S.R. 117 and turned west onto C.R. 38, where the car went off the right side of the road and struck a ditch, according to crash reports.

No injuries were reported in the crash.

Deputies detected an odor of alcohol from the driver and noted he had glassy, bloodshot eyes and dilated pupils.

Gooding failed field sobriety tests.

He and his female passenger were transported to the Logan County Jail, where she waited for a ride from a sober driver.

Gooding submitted to a breathalyzer test, which registered a 0.175 blood alcohol content — more than twice the legal limit.

He was cited for OVI and failure to control.

The car sustained functional damage and was towed from the scene.
