A Springfield man is in custody in connection with the death of a Bellefontaine woman last June after the two were involved in a one-vehicle crash on County Road 29.

Marcus A. Hagans, 38, was arrested on a warrant Monday afternoon, July 21, by deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of Bellefontaine police. He was driving on East Chillicothe Avenue between Park and Powers streets when his vehicle was stopped by law enforcement.

Hagans was lodged in the Logan County Jail.

The suspect is facing possible aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges related to the June 18, 2024, death of 32-year-old Brittnie Whetsel.

On June 17, 2024, Hagans was driving a 2022 Polaris Slingshot three-wheeled motorcycle southeast on C.R. 29 about 2:45 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the right side of the road. The vehicle struck brush and debris in the tree line, then overturned, coming to rest on its top.

Hagans and Whetsel, a passenger in the vehicle, each were taken by Macochee EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for suspected serious injuries.

Whetsel succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Alcohol and/or drugs were investigated as potential contributing factors to the crash.
