Curtis Joel Champion, 55, of 4280 Kress Dr., was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, following a two-vehicle accident in the 2500 block of south Main Street Friday, July 11, at about 7 p.m.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department report Champion was driving southbound on Main Street when he twice struck the rear of another southbound vehicle.

Once arriving on the scene to investigate, officers noted that Champion showed signs of intoxication. He reportedly failed field sobriety tests, at which time he was arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail, where a breathalyzer test indicated Champion had a BAC of 0.162.

The defendant was also cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead and received a court date before being released to a sober driver. No injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

• Officers also report that Josiah Steven Strahm, 22, of Kenton, was arrested at the Logan County Fairgrounds Friday about 6:37 p.m. on a failure to appear warrant, with deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office assisting with the arrest.

Summons issued after officers break up fight

Officers broke up what was first reported to be a large fight in the 400 block of Clark Ave. early Friday morning.

According to the BPD report, a caller contacted dispatch at 12:29 a.m. Friday, reporting as many as 10 people were attacking an individual on Clark Avenue and that firearms were involved.

Three officers responded to the scene immediately and found five individuals there, four of whom immediately followed the officers’ orders, while a fifth, Robert Baum II, 47, of 547 E. Columbus Ave., Apt 4, remained argumentative before eventually complying with the officers’ commands.

Police searched each of the individuals and none were carrying firearms.

While investigating the incident, officers learned that this gathering was part of an ongoing spat that Baum was having with a named individual who lived on Clark Avenue and that Baum was there to “shut him up”, with witnesses reporting that Baum stood outside the individual’s house calling him out to fight.

While police were able to diffuse the situation, Baum, who showed signs of intoxication, continued to mouth off to the officers, at which point he was issued a summons for disorderly conduct/public intoxication and released to the custody his daughter.

No other individuals were charged in the incident.
