An unexpected turn of events led to laughter at the Logan County Fair specialty cake
judging on Thursday, July 10, when only one baker dared attempt this year’s recipe — an inside-out peppermint patty cake. And considering the stress of the previous night’s home goods auction, they needed the light-hearted moment.
Last year’s winner in this category, Terri Mees, chose her grandma’s three-layered
chocolate cake with seven-minute peppermint-marshmallow icing as this year’s challenge.
Amy Armentrout submitted that one entry, which she almost didn’t make either after her first try the night before failed.
But her second attempt not only earned the blue ribbon, but praise from Mees.
“This is really good,” she said, then added, “I’ve made it twice and this is better than any of mine.”
Though Armentrout found the recipe “very hard” as it involved baking challenges she
hadn’t done before, she admitted “it was fun to make.”
As this year’s winner, Armentrout will pick the cake recipe for the 2026 competition.
